Protocols by layer & containment zone
Every protocol sits at the layer it really uses, and each band is also a containment zone: routable protocols ride TCP/IP and are cut at an L3 conduit; real-time ones run on Ethernet (Layer 2) and are held by VLAN; serial fieldbuses predate TCP/IP and are contained at the gateway.
